About

My name is Jessica Moffatt. I graduated with a practical nurse diploma and immunization certificate from Bow Valley College. Shortly after I had my own son and my life was turned upside down. I begun to learn what nursing never was able to teach me, how to be a mother.

I had a very difficult childbirth. Looking back on it, I wish I had had a birth doula. Two weeks later my husband had to go back to work and be away from home for long periods of time, while I was home alone with our newborn son. It was challenging for him as he wanted to be home, but it was also challenging for me as I had no family around and felt alone and unsure to whether I was doing the right things. I didn’t know anyone who had even tried to breastfeed, and I was just doing what I read about in textbooks. We did hire a postpartum doula. She helped me feel more confident, helped me with light household tasks, helped me find out if my breastfeeding was going well, as well as helped me bath my tiny little guy.

I decided to become a doula to help other women in similar situations to what I had been in. I have done my training through DONA, which was where I had found my own doula, and I am also working on certification through DONA. I am currently a member of Calgary Doula Association and also have completed pregnancy and infant loss support training through the Calgary Pregnancy and Infant Loss Centre.

Let’s make something together.
